Hyperthreading XP

Dell forget to put XP service pack1 on my new desktop (see yesterday's post), which was OK because I only needed a little excuse the wipe the machine clean and install the OS myself without the Dell clutter.

I was curious to see whether XP professional would figure out the machine wasn't really running 4 processors, but only two in hyperthreading mode. I had run .NET Server OK in a similar configuration, but this was XP Prof, limited to two processors. And yes indeed without any hickup the 2 processor version installs and the 4 processors show up in the task manager. As evidenced below.

I guess working at a university has its perks! Alas, I just work at a small commercial software vendor... :-)
