Just like Evan and Adam, I would strongly suggest that those who have an interest in software development read Paul Graham's Hackers and Painters. It is a collection of his essays, most which are also available online.
He addresses a variety of subjects from design to economics, all in a manner that triggers longer term thinking by the reader. I appreciated the writing most for its insights into the creative process. It is not too late to order it for yourself or your friends as a holiday gift (express shipping); last week I ordered 10 copies to give the book to my immediate colleagues
If you want to get a teaser you should read the "Made in USA" essay which is not in the book
